Market Research & Development Studies
- Study on Access to Business Grants and Impact on Performance of MSMEs: MarketSight conducted Key Informant Interviews with Grantmakers to elicit information on factors influencing access to business grants and eligibility criteria, while In-depth Interviews were conducted with owner-managers of MSMEs followed by a survey of owner-managers of MSMEs to assess the impact on their businesses in Lagos State, Nigeria.
- Hand Hygiene Baseline Market Assessment: The study used Focus Group Discussions, Key Informant Interviews, In-depth Interviews and Observations to collect information on hand hygiene knowledge, attitude and practices as well as products usage by households, schools, healthcare centres, event centres, motor parks, markets, and religious centres. We also gather information on hand hygiene products supply-chain from government MDAs, NGOs/CBOs, manufacturers of hand wash facilities, importers of sink and wash products, distributors of soaps and sanitizers, bulk material suppliers of hand wash stations, etc., across the 6 geo-political zones of Nigeria (Abuja, Akure, Bauchi, Enugu, Kaduna, Kano, Lagos, Maiduguri, Onitsha, Port Harcourt, and Sokoto).
- Market Survey of Suppliers and Service Providers for Pre-qualification: The project covered recruitment, field verification and profiling of close to 2,000 potential suppliers and service providers for outsourcing possibilities of Construction and related services, Equipment and related supplies, Emergency non-food items and related supplies, Administrative Services, Logistics Services, Print production and services, and Professionals Consultancy services across Abuja, Lagos, Enugu, Bauchi, Port Harcourt, Akure, Jos, Kano and Kaduna States in Nigeria.
- Nigeria and Uganda – Study on Access to Finance by Small and Growing Businesses (SGBs): In-depth Interviews, Survey and Case Study were conducted among SGBs to understand their financing needs and challenges as well as programs that support their growth. The study also identified the financing gaps among the financial service providers (FSPs) using In-depth Interviews and Survey among banks, finance houses, private equity investors and venture capitalists. The project incorporated workshops for financial service providers (FSPs) and validation workshops for SGBs in Lagos and Kampala.
- ICT Penetration Analysis and Needs Assessment in South-West Nigeria: The study involved a survey of households and public and private business institutions on access and usage of ICT by households, individuals and businesses, including the challenges they face in accessing ICT facilities. MarketSight collected data from rural and urban settings in Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo States, Nigeria.
- Institutional Capacity and Staff Capacity Assessment: MarketSight in conjunction with our respected principal partner, BKO Citadel, were engaged to assess the institutional capacity of an agency and all its staff in coordinating and implementing a social intervention program. The objectives were to identify areas of needed capacity improvement on the basis of their job schedule and improve the quality of programmes and services in terms of focus, impact and magnitude. The assignment was carried out across 12 states spread over four geopolitical zones in Nigeria.
- Impact Assessment of Micro Retailing Intervention Project for Wholesale and Retail Sector: The assessment employed Key Informant Interviews, Focus Group Discussions and Survey to collect data from wholesalers/distributors and micro retailers of grocery products in Delta, Ekiti, FCT, Kaduna, Kano, Lagos, Niger, and Oyo States, Nigeria.
- Customer Research on Attitudes, Behaviours and Testing of Different Packaging Concepts for Pharmaceutical Products in 5 African Countries: The project comprised of Key Informant Interviews, Focus Group Discussions and Market Exploratory Visits to collect data and gain insights from Doctors, Pharmacists and Patients in Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia & Ivory Coast.
- Baseline Study of Aquaculture Market and Value-Chain Analysis: The project involved In-depth Interviews, Focus Group Discussions, and Survey to elicit information from fish farmers, fish feed dealers, fish processors and marketers/sellers and establish baseline indicators before the kick-off of market intervention to generate pro-poor and inclusive economic growth in the non-oil sectors of the Niger Delta Region.
- Baseline Study of Oil Palm Market and Value-Chain Analysis: The project encompassed In-depth Interviews, Focus Group Discussions, and Survey to collect information from Oil Palm Small & Medium Scale Farmers, Processors, Traders and Machine Fabricators to establish baseline indicators before the kick-off of market intervention aimed at generating pro-poor and inclusive economic growth in the non-oil sectors of the Niger Delta Region.
- Baseline Study of Potential Micro-distributors: MarketSight and BKO-Citadel were engaged to conduct the baseline study using In-depth Interviews, Focus Group Discussions, and Survey among women traders and households in Nasarawa state and the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria.
- Adult Population Survey and National Expert Survey on Entrepreneurship in Nigeria: A 3-year multi-country policy research and capacity building project on ‘Fostering Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Livelihoods in Sub-Saharan Africa with particular emphasis on Youth Entrepreneurship’. The Adult Population Survey (APS) investigates individuals’ attitudes and activities related to entrepreneurship and the role of the individual in the lifecycle of the entrepreneurial process, and his or her characteristics or actions. MarketSight was engaged to conduct the Adult Population Survey (APS) among over 2,000 adults and National Expert Survey (NES) in 13 states (including the FCT, Abuja) to cover the six geo-political zones of Nigeria as part of Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) in conjunction with the Global Entrepreneurship Research Association (GERA) of the United States of America. The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) is a not-for-profit academic research consortium, which estimates the participation in business start-ups and new firms in different countries.
- Institutional Assessment and Development of Blue Print (Strategy Document): MarketSight was engaged to conduct institutional assessment for a new government ministry to find out what are its prospects and challenges; audit existing facilities in the state, and need assessment of the facilities; develop the ministry’s blueprint, business and academic plans for running and maintenance of the technical and vocational training centers. In carrying out the assignment, MarketSight adopted a multi-dimensional approach for information collection which comprised of inception meeting, exploratory meetings/interactive sessions, workshop/brainstorming session, desk research, questionnaires for structured interviews, and facility tour of existing technical and vocational training centers outside the state. The exercise covered the ministry’s office, skill acquisition centers, junior and secondary schools, and technical colleges.
- Annual Beverage Industry Monitoring and Analysis in Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Senegal and DRC (2009 – 2012): To conduct a comprehensive market analysis and ensuring comprehensive coverage of categories such as soft drinks, beer, cider, milk, hot drinks, and alcoholic beverages, MarketSight deployed methodologies which included extensive desk research of secondary sources including company data, industry websites, magazines, reports; face-to-face meetings with key stakeholders—importers, distributors, producers, and brand owners—representing over 10% of the market volume in each category or all major players in fragmented markets. An independent reconciliation of national category production volumes was performed using alternative calculation routes, such as data from ingredient and packaging suppliers. The research also involved sourcing information from major suppliers of packaging materials and ingredients, industry associations, and conducting observations at major retail chains, food service outlets, vending machines, wholesalers, and distributors.
Business Development Services
- Workshop on Financing Gaps for Small and Growing Businesses (SGBs): MarketSight organised a one-day Stakeholder Workshop themed Addressing the Financing Gaps for Small and Growing Enterprises in Nigeria” with participants drawn from financial institutions as well as the academic community in Lagos, Nigeria. The workshop objectives were to identify financing gaps/challenges faced by Small and Growing Businesses (SGBs); financing options available to close that financing gap; ascertain the role of financial institutions/investors in supporting SGBs; and establish future directions/strategies for financing SGBs to reach their full potential.
- Business Development Support for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises: The GEM Project was a Government of Nigeria initiative to provide business development support, training and finance to high growth SMEs to enable them overcome identified constraints and unleash their growth potentials. MarketSight was engaged as a Business Development Service Provider (BDSP) to provide support covering training and coaching in the areas of business strategy planning, operations, finance and accounts, marketing and sales, and human resources management for MSMEs as well as facilitate their access to finance (grants or credits/loans) in Cross River, Kwara and Lagos States, Nigeria.
- Staff Audit and Manpower Planning for Academic Institutions: MarketSight conducted current manpower inventory, job analysis, skill gap analysis, training needs assessment, and developed performance management system using key performance indicators (KPIs) to improve staff performances and guarantee excellent job outputs on behalf of our clients in the educational sector.
- General Entrepreneurship Development Programme (GEDP) for Small and Medium Enterprises: MarketSight was engaged as a Business Development Service Provider (BDSP) to conduct a 5-day training and capacity building to current and potential small business entrepreneurs in Oyo State, Nigeria. The programme encompassed the development of the capacity of Nigerian small businesses through the provision of relevant training, mentoring, counselling and relevant advisory services, among other things. The Entrepreneurship Training covered 8 modular sessions viz. – A-Z of Starting & Running a Business; Basic Accounting & Financial Management; Marketing Strategies & Selling Skills for MSMEs; Preparation of Feasibility Report/Business Plans; Financing Your Business; Human Resource Management Skills; ICT Appreciation for Small Business; and Business Development & Presentation (Practical Assignments).
- Business Development Support Services in Agro-Allied Sector: MarketSight was retained for four years to conduct the business feasibility study, the business plans and financial projections for our client producing and marketing fish and poultry feeds in Abuja, Nigeria. Our Lead Consultant doubled as Executive Director responsible for the company presenting and facilitating meetings among stakeholders on successful implementation of the business plan; prospecting for financial sources for the business; directing and monitoring the operations and marketing of the Fish Feed Mill; participating in quarterly board meetings to partake in decision making process.
- Providing BDS Services to Ofada Rice Marketers: PrOpCom was an innovative project funded by the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom (DFID) to facilitate functionality and efficiency of Nigerian commodity and service markets in such a way as to assure these markets benefit the poor. In pursuant of its project objectives, MarketSight was engaged to facilitate and improve the businesses of Ofada Rice Marketers (ORMs) in Southwest Nigeria. We deployed tools and processes for implementing the project, including: business audit checklist used for preliminary assessment of the ORMs and facilitating the business assessment sessions; business strategy development tools for facilitating the strategy development sessions; preparing the business plans and financial projections; presenting and facilitating workshops on successful implementation of business plans with a business management guide; prospecting for financial sources; and monitoring the progress of each ORM post-assignment.
- Institutional Assessment of Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN): Ogun State Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (Ogun RiFAN) is a network of rice farmers in Ogun State. Ogun RiFAN installed 3 Kubota rice-milling machines (with de-stoners and polishers) out of 10 offered to the association at 50% subsidy by the Ogun State Government. Also, the mill houses were built with the support of PrOpCOM/DFID. The 3 mills are located in Kobape, Iboro and Obada-oko in Obafemi-Owode, Yewa North, and Ewekoro local government areas of Ogun State. MarketSight was appointed to carry out an organizational assessment (OA) of RIFAN. The final report produced the SWOT analysis of Ogun RIFAN and made recommendations in the areas of organizational identity, mission and vision, membership drive and composition, external relationship management, institutional capacity building, and human and material resource mobilization. We equally prepared the business plan and facilitated a workshops for the association on successful implementation of business plan with a business management guide and registration of RIFAN Ofada Rice Mills Limited with CAC and Trade Mark.
- Valued Retailers Workshop on Making Improved Decisions for Business Growth: Valued Retailers Workshop was a core activity of the Pharmacy Partnership Project designed to develop a long-term relationship between our pharmaceutical manufacturing client and the pharmacies/pharmacists (outlets) with a view to continually improves the customers’ operations, sales and profits. The objectives of the project were to cultivate loyalty of Pharmacies/Pharmacists to protect the client’s brands; create communication channel/feedback mechanism for the client on market activities (market intelligence) which help in planning strategies to defend its brands. MarketSight was engaged to develop and implement Valued Retailers Workshops conducted in Lagos, Ibadan, Benin, Owerri, Aba, Kano, Gombe and Abuja for pharmacy outlet owners selected as valued retailers. the workshop proposal and topics covering Inventory Management for Retail Business, Importance of Keeping Financial Records, Documentation for Loan, and Winning Tips for In-store Sales; developing the workshop presentation materials and facilitating the sessions in all locations.
- Business Development Support Services to Private Schools: MarketSight was retained by our clients running Private Schools to develop and execute marketing communication programmes aimed at recruiting pupils into their schools. MarketSight provided advertising campaign (billboard, radio jingles and newspaper adverts) and road shows to promote the schools as part of its preparation for new academic sessions.
